Hello CF! I’m Katy, and we’ve actually known each other for a while. I’ve been writing for College Fashion for three years, but now I’m taking over the Monthly Favorites column from the fab Christina.
For me, July has been a month of trying to figure out my future, drinking copious amounts of Pellegrino Limonata, and getting scared of the new, stalker-y map feature on Snapchat. I’ve spent a lot of time with friends a lot of time sending out resumes, and more time than I’d like to admit rewatching “Yu-Gi-Oh!” on Netflix. I guess the overarching theme of this month’s picks, then, is finding fun ways to relieve stress and generally being a nerd. But then again, those are also the overarching themes of my life.
So without further ado, here’s what I’m loving and coveting this month.
Table of Contents
My Favorites
Boxing workout
My dad has been helping me try out this badass new workout. He holds boxing mitts up on his hands, and I punch! Not only is boxing a great workout you can do with limited space, but it’s fun bonding time with a buddy and hella empowering. I love knowing that I have the strength to defend myself if need be.
It doesn’t hurt that I’ve got the most perfect boxing gloves — they’re pink and vegan leather, a.k.a. so Katy. You can snag a pair for under $25, and find all kinds of different punches to try online.
Harry Potter Herbology tank
I’ve gushed about Hot Topic‘s amazing selection of unique and fashionable fandom merch on CF before. There’s no better example than this tank, which has been my favorite purchase this month.
While it may look like a typical printed tank, if you look closer you’ll see that those aren’t typical florals, but actually Dirigible Plums, Mandrakes, Gillyweed, and Flesh-Eating Slugs (all things from the Harry Potter horticultural world). And with its subtle–possibly even obscure–HP-referencing print, its lace trim, and its strappy crisscross back, this tank is a major style step up from a typical fandom tee.
Who knew that Flesh-Eating Slugs could be fashionable? Now I can’t believe I ever doubted it.
The Bold Type
If you haven’t watched Freeform’s new show, which is about three young women working at a magazine inspired by Cosmo (former editrix Joanna Coles is an executive producer), then I give you permission to stop reading this article right now and go do so.
This show is fresh, fun, feminist, and full of references to everything that is going on right now — from politics to Hamilton. It also could not have been released at a better time in my life. Right now, I’m applying to jobs at women’s magazines, and watching Kat, Jane, and Sutton get their start in the business is super inspiring. Sometimes, the career concerns they express feel like they could have come right out of my mouth.
The Bold Type is an absolute must-watch for any girl who loves fashion, magazines, and seeing women kick butt. Besides, you know you need something to watch on Tuesday nights now that PLL is over.
My Wishlist
Frayed denim jacket
Doesn’t this fringey topper look like it could be by Marques Almeida? But it’s just $58–a little pricier than typical Forever 21 fare, yes, but it’s part of their online stock of other, lesser-known brands. And I think I’d totally get my money’s worth of wears out of it.
Imagine this baby over a slipdress. Or a jumpsuit. Or black pants. Or with florals. Or with tons of bracelets and a red lip. Drool.
Venessa Arizaga unicorn bracelet
Fun is the only word for hip designer Venessa Arizaga’s quirky friendship bracelets. You can find one emblazoned with almost every pun, idiom, and yes, curse word. Her bold beads in the shape of everything from foods to emojis will totally stand out in an arm party.
I’ve recently confessed my late arrival to the millennial-obsession-with-unicorns-party, but here I am. This little bracelet will go with everything because of all the colors in the cord, so I’d never have to take it off.
Fenty Puma mini skirt
Behold, the splurge item of this month’s wishlist.
I have been OBSESSED with Fenty Puma (a special collection designed by Rihanna for Puma) this season, both because I think Queen Rhi is the ultimate girlboss and because it’s just so. Freakin’. Good.
I’ve already added the pink bow slides and the lilac polo dress to my wardrobe, but I’ve been daydreaming about this scalloped mini since I first saw it in the lookbook. I’m in love with the so-trendy lavender shade and the contrast of the girly eyelet with the sporty shape.
I’d love to style this with a white tee and cool sneaks. I am a little concerned that it’s too short to actually wear, and that it will only work in the summer (not so good with tights). But this is my wishlist, darn it, and wishlists are not about practicality.
What do you think?
