Keeping with our “oldie-but-goodie” movie scheme, this week’s inspiration comes from the original bromance film, Top Gun. In case you haven’t caught it yet, the film follows a group of guys at a prestigious flight school through training, tragedy, and of course, love. This movie was a vehicle for Tom Cruise to launch into major-movie-star status and put names like Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, and Val Kilmer on the map.

Okay, so I realize I’m kind of out of control — every movie I’ve done a post on is full of delicious eye candy. But ladies, really, is there anything better than hot guys AND fashion at the same time? Sitting by a hot guy at a fashion show? (Oh wait…) Eating chocolate while getting a pedicure? Exactly. And Top Gun is truly full of gorgeous guys.

Personally, I’m an Iceman girl. Check this out:

So, his hair might resemble Pauly D’s, but Val Kilmer was adorable. Let’s face it: he could have a creepy mustache or wear a fur vest and I’d still think he was cute (watch Tombstone or the Doors for proof).

Whether you loved Iceman, Merlin, Maverick, or Goose, I think we can all agree that Charlie was the true belle of the ball. Her power suits, red lipstick, and voluminous hair were the definition of fierce. However, Kelly McGillis isn’t the only person we’re drawing inspiration from in this post. Ladies, do you feel the need…the need for speed? Read on to see outfits inspired by Top Gun!

Danger Zone

Confession: freshman year of college, I went to the army surplus store and bought a flight jumpsuit. And you know what? I’ve worn it twice a year since then! Between Halloween and army-themed date parties, there’s always been a excuse for me to bust out my favorite costume. Of course, you might look a tad bit ridiculous wearing something like that to class. So here are a few Air Force-inspired outfits that look tough but not costume-esque:

top-gun-1

Pants, Shirt, Sunnies, Shoes, Watch, Necklace

Last season’s oh-so-hot skinny cargo pants are back for another go around. Add androgynous pieces like a striped shirt and a mens watch, and – in keeping with the theme – an airplane necklace and a pair of aviators. Girl up the look with a pair of desert-sand wedges.

Jacket, Shorts, Shirt, Shoes, Bag, Aviators

Utility jackets are probably my favorite trend of the last few years. I especially love pairing them with girly dresses for contrast! They’re also perfect for fall days when it’s just a little chilly walking from class to class. Add a graphic tee and your favorite pair of sneakers and shorts. Finish with a messenger bag and (of course) a pair of aviators.

Vest, Tee, Boots, Pants, Necklace, Hat

I wanted to keep these looks somewhat seasonal (it’s still 100+ degrees in Oklahoma) so instead of a classic aviator jacket, I found this warm weather-perfect vest! Pair it with a classic black t-shirt, skinny khakis, and combat boots. If you’re feeling adventurous, add a military hat and a take on a dog-tag necklace.

You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling

My mother reminds me every time an ’80s movie comes on TNT (so pretty much every day) that she almost named me Charlie after the heroine of Top Gun. After seeing this film, I completely understand why — Kelly McGillis was a badass! She worked that oversized blazer like nobody’s business. Obviously, if I were her I would have chosen Iceman, but I suppose a girl really can’t complain about ending up with Maverick.

Blazer, Shirt, Skirt, Shoes, Lipstick, Mousse

To steal Charlie’s look, find a bad-gal black skirt and pair it with a loose-fitting white top. The sexiness of the skirt will contrast nicely with a boyfriend-cut blazer. Add heels and a swipe of red lipstick for some retro glamour. To finish the look, add plenty of volume to your hair with some styling mouse and a teasing comb. Now, go out and take (his) breath away!

Thoughts?

Have you seen Top Gun? What do you think of the outfits? How do you feel about the military trends we’ve seen over the last few seasons? What other movies would you like to see CF cover? Leave a comment and tell us what you think!

  3. Great post. We love the 80s here at UjENA. Personally, I’m more of a Maverick fan. I’m on the lookout for the desert color wedge shoes, like your first outfit.

  4. Great post, I think I may need to rock the look with the converse and shorts while I still can! Then when it gets a little cooler chuck some tights under or trade in the shorts for skinnies!
