One of the most iconic characters in American film, Dorothy Gale from the classic movie The Wizard of Oz has inspired and delighted audiences for decades. From her ruby red slippers to her adorable little dog Toto, Dorothy’s adventures on the Yellow Brick Road are adored by fans young and old. By the end of the movie, she has us all saying “There’s no place like home,” with a click of her magical – and stylish – shoes.
Even though the film was released in 1939, Judy Garland’s Dorothy remains a fabulous source of fashion inspiration! Her gingham print dress and girly aesthetic can be used to inspire your everyday looks. Below, I’ve created several outfits inspired by Dorothy Gale. Scroll down to view them all!

There’s No Place Like Home
Top, Skirt, Oxfords, Bag, Earrings
Dorothy’s life in Kansas may be in grayscale, but you can rock this Technicolor outfit inspired by life on the prairie! Wear a pretty cream blouse tucked into a trendy high-low skirt for a relaxed, romantic feel. Slip on a pair of oxfords, grab a clutch bag, and put in poppy-colored stud earrings to complete the look!
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Dress, Cardigan, Flats, Earrings, Headband
You definitely aren’t in Kansas anymore in this cute ensemble. Wear a gingham print sundress that channels Dorothy’s iconic blue and white frock. Accessorize with a white cardigan and a pair of bold red ballet flats. Simple accessories like ruby red earrings and a bow headband keep the look super girly!
Off to See the Wizard
Top, Jeggings, TOMS, Bag, Earrings
Traveling down the Yellow Brick Road is a lot more fun in this casual but cute look! Pair a checked button-up shirt with white jeggings. Wear with bright red TOMS, and grab a woven satchel bag for a fun twist on Dorothy’s picnic basket. Bow earrings complete the ensemble!
Merry Old Land of Oz

Go for a trendy look inspired by Dorothy in a gingham crop top and high-waisted denim shorts. Wear with a white jean jacket and a pair of red glitter sneakers. Ruffle socks and a cute bow necklace finish the look!

Dress, Boots, Belt, Headband, Earrings
We can’t forget about Dorothy’s adorable sidekick, Toto! This adorable terrier-printed dress pays tribute to America’s favorite dog. Pair it with lace-up boots for a bit of an edge. Add a belt, satin headband, and bow earrings to complete the outfit.
What do you think?
Are you inspired by Dorothy Gale? Would you wear any of the looks above? Which one is your favorite? Would you like to see more posts like these in the future? Let me know in the comments!
I think it’d be really awesome to do Steel Magnolias! A lot what they wore is in style again (florals, bright lipstick, etc)!
Please do How to train your dragon!!!!!! :))
All of these looks are super cute but I have to agree with Shelby, I was hoping you wouldn’t do the gingham dress with red shoes. Just seems a little too obvious and slightly costume-y. But other than that, great job!
Could you please try and do some outfits that are available in England? Im so jealous of the beautiful clothes featured, because usually the ones i like the most are only available from US sites 🙁 I especially like the little mermaid inspired outfit, its gorgeous. I love all of the outfit ideas so far, i wish i had these outfits in my wardrobe 😀 xx
This is the most gorgeous idea! I love looking to classic style icons for my inspiration, and this is as classic as it gets…
Ah love this! So so cute! These posts are always so fun to read 🙂
please, please, please! do a 2 broke girls: max black one! i just love the show (SO OBSESSED!) and max! everything about her: her hair, make up, style, humor. PLEASE? 😀 *dachshund face* *puppy eyes*
Cute! If you read the book, her shoes are actually supposed to be silver. So if you wanted to be super authentic, you should swap out those red shoes for something silver. 🙂
Love the “Somewhere over the rainbow” look! But it’s so had to choose a favorite when all of these outfits are amazing! I would love to see more 😉 Great post
I would love a post on An Education and Roman Holiday 🙂
I think that these are great. I am really fond of the third look. I just finished reading the Wicked year series. I think that a few fashion inspirations could be taken from the Wicked the Musical and the Wicked books.
I love the second and third ones, very pin up , retro vibe! One of my favorite movies for inspiration is Roman Holiday, gotta love Audrey 😉
I’m pretty certain that this movie is part of the reason that I like gingham so much.
I love all these outfits! I definitely want each one of these in my wardrobe!
Dorothy Gale is my favorite and I love the first and last outfit but I’d hoped that you’d avoid the gingham with red shoes look—it screams Dorothy rather than just being a subtle inspiration.
I love all of these! I’d love to see more posts like these, they’re always my favorite. Some good movies for inspiration: Grease, Dirty Dancing, Now & Then, Harold & Maude, An Education
