With more than 150 million views on YouTube, chances are you’ve seen Britney Spears’ (arguably) most iconic music video.
Yes, that’s right, today we’re throwing it back to the bubblegum pop hit that defined many of our childhoods: “…Baby One More Time”.
You may ask, “Why, Carly? How is Britney’s 1998 breakout single relevant to my style now, in 2015?”
Excellent question.
With the insane ’90s fashion revival that has taken this year by storm, many of Brit’s outfits from way-back-when can spark some serious current-day trend inspiration. And, believe it or not, it can be wearable… as long as we forgo the pink feather scrunchies and body glitter.
Table of Contents
1. My Loneliness Is Killing Me
This schoolgirl outfit is considered to be Britney’s most iconic ever (in fact, it is on display in Las Vegas). If we tone it down just a tad, it becomes the perfect look for Tuesday morning’s Econ lecture.
Cardigan // Blouse // Skirt // Pumps // Sneakers // Lipstick
Once you untie the blouse, take out the fluffy pink pigtail holders, and halt all ’90s dance moves, Ms. Spears’ schoolgirl outfit becomes much more “schoolwoman”.
Ditch the knee-high socks and go with classic black pumps, or equally timeless white sneakers. Of course, we wouldn’t want to lose all semblance of the video, because how boring would that be?! So, complete the look with a trendy swipe of brown lipstick.
2. I Must Confess….
Okay, okay, half the reason I chose this shot from the video is because Britney’s sporting an incredibly perfect “derp” face. But I digress…
Britney’s bubblegum pink sports bra reminds me of another pop artist’s more recently released video. Brights are definitely back “in” when it comes to workout gear, and who doesn’t love a little pick-me-up during a gym session?
Sweatshirt // Sports Bra // Shorts // Sneakers // Socks // Face Wipes
Maybe you don’t want to go full-on Troy Bolton by wearing white sweatpants– and frankly, I don’t blame you. Soften up a bold pink sports bra with these precious, pale rose-colored running shorts.
If you choose to run outside, it may get a bit chilly in the evening, so take along a quarter-zip sweatshirt (how cute is the personalized monogram?!). Add some trusty athletic shoes– I always like to wear fun socks with mine!
Also, let’s be real: Have you ever seen Brit with a zit? Be sure to finish your workout with a pat-down from an oil-free face wipe.
3. Hit Me Baby, One More Time
Not all of us get to show off our killer abs or do backflips in front of cute basketball players, but if there was ever an outfit to do it in, this would be it.
Tank // Bralette // Sweatpants // Slippers // Headband // Headphones
My #1 priority at school? Managing to look presentable while schlepping around and watching Netflix. This crop top and lounge pants combo is definitely cozy, but still maintains maximum levels of cuteness.
Disguise second-day hair with an adorable headband and a nice pair of headphones (to listen to your favorite Spears jams, of course). Pair the tank with a comfy-chic lace bralette and some “I’m almost kind of trying!” slippers to finish the look.
