You know those days – the ones where you roll out of bed (after hitting the snooze button too many times), stumble into your closet, and have no idea what to wear? Our series Easy Outfit Formulas is here to help! Every other week, I’ll feature two items (which you might own already) that can be paired into outfits for those days when you need some quick and easy inspiration.
Since summer is winding down and fall is approaching, transitional dressing is the name of the game right now. I’ve already covered one outfit formula for transitional weather – crop tops and maxi skirts – and this week I’m covering another: sweaters and high-waisted shorts.
You probably have at least one pair of trendy high-waisted shorts in your summer wardrobe, so all you need to do is pull out one of your favorite sweaters from storage, and – ta da! – you have a cute and simple back-to-school outfit.
Below are three stylish looks that incorporate this outfit formula – scroll down to check them out:

Casual Prep
Product Info: Sweater – Modcloth, Shorts – Forever 21, Sneakers – Keds, Backpack – Aeropostale, Earrings – Sole Society, Headband – Modcloth
This look is a mix of casual, preppy, nautical, and girly elements, so it’s a great ensemble for trying out different styles. White cut-off denim shorts tone down a bright graphic sweater, while navy sneakers keep the outfit versatile and comfortable. A floral backpack is perfect for class and adds a feminine touch, as do the sparkly jeweled earrings and cute owl-print headband.
Worldly & Eclectic
Product Info: Sweater – Old Navy, Shorts – Maurices, Sandals – Zappos, Bag – Miss Selfridge, Bracelet – Humble Chic, Earrings – Vince Camuto, Scarf – Target
Our next outfit has a global, eclectic feel that’s perfect for a chic world traveler. Pair a teal v-neck sweater with bold, printed tie-waist shorts, then slip on strappy leather sandals. Use a matching leather tote to carry all of your belongings (whether it be books or flea market finds), and add a burgundy scarf for an extra layer of warmth and color.
Lastly, accessorize with your most unique jewelry pieces, like etched hoop earrings and a geometric cuff (or a handcrafted piece you picked up while abroad!).
Mixed Media
Product Info: Sweater – Dorothy Perkins, Shorts – Kohl’s, Tights – Daily Look, Boots – Lord & Taylor, Bag – Mango, Bangles – Wet Seal, Earrings – Vince Camuto
This chic black-and-white look is super-cool, trendy, and ideal for a cold weather date or girls’ night out. Though the colors are muted, the mix of textures adds lots of visual interest.
Start with an embellished white sweater and black faux leather shorts, then wear black tights for warmth. Black wedge heels will elongate your legs and add some height. For more texture, add sparkly metallic bangles and silver studs, then complete the outfit with a quilted, blush-colored bag.
