When keeping up with the ever changing fashion trends, going back to the classics is a breath of fresh air. They transition from season to season, complementing the trends as well as old favorites.
A cable knit sweater is one of these beloved pieces. No matter the year, you can pull out your classic cable knit sweater and look fabulous.

With a Mini Skirt
Products: Sweater – Topshop, Skirt – Express, OTK Boots – Target
Taking this classic sweater and adding it to a mini skirt creates an exciting look! Here, I’ve created a chic outfit that can transition from day to night, perfect for anyone with a busy schedule.
Go for a trendy feel by opting for an animal printed skirt. (Or, if you prefer to stick with simplicity, you can swap it for a solid and this will still work.)
Finish off the look with either OTK or ankle boots. If you live somewhere cold, I definitely recommend OTK boots for the extra warmth.
Winter Whites
Products: Sweater – Abercrombie, Jeans – Abercrombie, Shoes – ALDO, Purse – Target
The “Fashion Rules” were meant to be broken, especially the “no white after Labor Day” rule. Pairing white jeans and a cable knit helps bring lightness to a dark winter day.
Also, when styling, I always keep with the light neutrals — here, I added nude flats and a blush purse. Going this route allows you to truly stand out in your Winter Whites. (Be careful not to spill your coffee though!)
Over a Slip Dress
Products: Dress – Topshop, Sweater – Mango, Heels – ASOS, Purse – ALDO
Last minute plans no longer have to be a hassle. By popping a cable knit over a slip dress, you create a look that deserves to be worn out. The delicate slip balances a rather chunky knit, creating a perfectly balanced outfit.
Keeping accessories simple is key as to not overpower the look. My favorite pairings are dainty jewelry, strappy heels, and a small clutch.
Soften Faux Leather Pants
Products: Pants – Express, Sweater – BP at Nordstrom, Boots – H&M
Soften a pair of faux leather pants with your cable knit. Adding a lighter element to this outfit helps create balance, resulting in the perfect look. This allows you to express both feminine and masculine styles with a fun outfit.
Finish it off with a pair of ankle boots and a cute, effortless bun in your hair. This makes the perfect look for going out after a long week of work or classes with your friends!
Comfy with Leggings
Products: Sweater – Leith at Nordstrom, Leggings – Nordstrom, Beanie – Topshop, Scarf – Abercrombie, Sneakers – Topshop
Saturday mornings can be both fashionable and cozy with this outfit combo. A pair of your favorite leggings with a cable knit can be enjoyed either in bed or at brunch.
When staying in, cozy up with these slippers and a good book! However, if brunch is calling your name, these sneakers, beanie, and scarf make it day-appropriate.
Sweater Dress with OTK Boots
Products: Sweater Dress – American Eagle, Boots – Target
A cable knit can also be styled in sweater dress form. The most classic combo is with OTK boots, which I find the easiest and most chic way to go.
However, if you desire a more casual look, sneakers work just as well! This pair is my favorite for this style! Either way this look is comfortable yet stylish.
