I spotted West Virginia University’s resident fashionista Sarah hanging out at the campus Young Life headquarters. In addition to being a dedicated student, Sarah spends several weeknights leading the well-known, non-denominational Christian organization at a local high school in town.
I loved her bright personality and her outfit’s analogous color scheme. With her Hunter boots and J. Crew rain coat, she wasn’t letting the rain slow her down.

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “I love to scroll through Pinterest and take inspiration from the looks I see online. I also tend to pay attention to those around me; I have a lot of super fashionable friends who are constantly inspiring me to try new things. Also, I love fashion bloggers, particularly Zoe Sugg and Sarah Vickers.”
Where do you like to shop? “I am absolutely obsessed with Free People. I also buy a lot of Anthropologie, J.Crew, and Urban Outfitters. If I’m going for a more casual look, Patagonia is my best friend.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “I would describe my style as versatile. There are days that I love to dress up for class, looking very girlish in a flowy Free People dress, and there are days I love to take a chance and wear something trendy or risky. But there are also days where I love to throw on a pair of Chacos and a Patagonia fleece to go hang out in the woods.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I chose this particular outfit because it was a rainy day and I wanted to stay dry while still looking put-together. My Hunter boots and J.Crew raincoat are both staples for every rainy day because they serve the practical purpose of keeping me dry but I also love the preppy style of these pieces. Under the rain coat, I put on the skirt and shirt combination because I love the way the flowy shirt lays over the skirt.”
What advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “My advice is to not be afraid to switch it up. Play around with the pieces in your closet and try new things! You’ll find your unique style when you step outside of the comfort of the normal.”
Do you have any favorite trends? “My favorite trend right now is the throwback to ’90s fashion. I [love] chokers, scrunchies, overalls, and bright prints. I feel like I get to live out what I grew up watching on TV.”
Do you have any favorite fashion designers? “When I first started getting into fashion I was immediately drawn to Michael Kors so I tend to still pay attention to him and what he does. I am nothing if not loyal.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Serena Van Der Woodsen. Watching Gossip Girl in middle school is when I really got into fashion. I always loved the way she looked and she inspired me to start shopping around and experimenting with my own look.”
Elements of Sarah’s Outfit
1. Hunter Boots
Can we just talk for a minute about how cute Sarah’s rain boots are? I love the purple lining and sole which really complement the sage green color. Rain boots are a classic choice for any dreary day.
2. Raincoat
This J.Crew anorak is the best choice for any student on a rainy day! This coat allows plenty of movement while insuring Sarah will stay dry during spring storms. Plus, check out all those pockets! There are so many spots readily available for anything you may need to tote around campus, like an ID or money.
3. Light Blue Crop Top
I immediately obsessed over Sarah’s crop top. It is the perfect length to be paired with her flowy black skirt and opaque tights. I love the sheerness and detail of the sleeves; they really transform her top.
