At 6:45 a.m. on the Monday morning after Thanksgiving break, I had approximately 2.5 minutes to get ready and get out the door to make it on time to my 8 a.m. class. Like almost all Monday mornings, I went to reach for my favorite dry shampoo – Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo – to rejuvenate my hair that I hadn’t washed since Saturday night… except, I couldn’t find it. Of course, I left it on my home bathroom counter, 3000 miles away, and for the remainder of the day, my oily hair was safely hidden under an incredibly unfashionable baseball cap.
As soon as I got out of class (well, after a much-needed shower and some hair-washing), I raced to Walmart to find a replacement for my Oscar Blandi. My college town doesn’t have a Sephora, so I was in search of cult favorites Psst or Batiste. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find either of them. However, I did see TRESemmé’s Fresh Start Dry Shampoo. I purchased it (for about $4), and was ecstatic about finding a dry shampoo that cost less than my favorite Starbucks order.

What is it?
TRESemmé’s product, like all dry shampoos, promises a clean head of hair without the hassle of washing – perfect for making that blowout last a day or two longer. Basically, you spray the product at your roots, brush it out, and voila– oil-free, clean hair.
The dry shampoo market isn’t perfect – even the best products (like my beloved Oscar Blandi) can give dark hair a greyish tint and take a while to completely brush out, so I really did not have high expectations for TRESemmé’s dry shampoo. I figured as long as it made my hair look not disgusting then I’d be happy. After all, I’d bought it for $4, so really, how could it even be a waste of money?
How did it work?
6:45 a.m., Wednesday morning: I reached for the TRESemmé and sprayed it on my roots. I waited a few minutes while I put on mascara/brow pencil, and then brushed my hair out. When I looked in the mirror, I expected marginally clean, maybe a bit matte, hair.
What I actually got was flat, lifeless, greyish greasy hair. Never before have I used a hair product that’s made my hair look worse than before I used it. Imagine how your hair looks after three or four days without washing it, and that’s how my hair looked after using this product. Some dry shampoo doesn’t exactly clean, but makes hair more voluminous- not this, as my hair fell flatter than before.
Honestly, I cannot see any positive use for this product. It might be one of the worst hair products I’ve ever personally tried – my roommate even tried it and hated it. This is definitely a waste of money – that $4 could have been better spent almost anywhere; even baby powder would have been more effective for the money. So if you’re looking for a good dry shampoo, don’t look to TRESemmé – you’ll end up disappointed.
Your thoughts?
Have you guys tried TRESemmé’s dry shampoo? What did you think? What is your favorite dry shampoo? Tell me in the comments!
I LOVE the Tresemme dry shampoo! In fact it’s the best one I’ve ever tried! At first I tried the Oscar Blandi one, which I liked, but I found the smell offensive and the bottle was just waaaay too small and didn’t last long enough to warrant me spending another $16 on it…So then I tried Tresemme…..and it was amazing!!!
I love the smell much better than the Blandi, and the bottle lasts 10x longer, and is a quarter of the price! When I put dry shampoo in, I spray it at my roots with my head upside down and ruffle my hair after spraying. I find the Tresemme is much better at giving me volume and taking the oiliness from my hair. If you just spray it and leave it in, of course it’s going to sit in your hair and create more oiliness!
I definitely LOVE the Tresemme 10x better than any other dry shampoo I tried. I definitely suggest trying it again.
I have to admit that I love this stuff! I really use it to freshen up my hair. I can do an extra day without shampooing. I do bathe everyday, but my hair is a hassle and gets dry with daily shampooing so I don’t do that. I like the smell and feel like it freshens my hair.
Maybe its just that type, because I have the treseme foam one for curly hair, and i really like it. 🙂
I tried salon grafix’s dry shampoo and had the same horrible results… at this point I’m sticking to good old talc powder. I use gold bond and the cooling effect makes you feel even more refreshed! I have very dark and curly hair so it definitely needs to be brushed in well and given at least 10 minutes to absorb before I can be seen in public, but hey, it’s been working!
I’m so glad that you reviewed this, I feel bad for the amount of people that think this will help. This was my first experience with dry shampoo as well so I was very skeptical of the rest. I love Psst, and once I wrangle in more money, I’ll have to invest in Oscar Blandi. Tresemme’s is more like a thick, gray tinted hairspray.
oh my god, i bought this product, and i absolutely hate it. it makes my hair feel gross and look white/grey and it’s just so awful. for a long time, i figured that was how all dry shampoos are until i read reviews of it. seriously, the worst product ever. right now i just use baby powder.
as for the girl who asked about showering everyday–also not to be rude, but i have really curly hair, and i can’t leave the house for an hour to an hour and a half after showering. i know it sounds dumb, especially if you don’t have hair like this–my friends with straight hair don’t understand. plus it’s not good to wash your hair too often. anyway, if i wake up and my hair looks good, i would much rather spray it with something than shower.
I agree completely! The first time I tried it, I thought that I hadn’t waited long enough before brushing my hair out, so the next time I tried it I waited longer. The end result was not much better. As the day wore on, my hair got greasier and greasier. It was not pleasant.
I just have to comment because of how much I HATE this product. It’s the grossest product I’ve ever used, and trust me… with fine, thin blonde hair I’ve used many.
And I also have to agree with everyone else. 🙂 Batiste and Psst are WONDERFUL. Absolutely life savers and work just as good (and the price makes them even better) as the $20 per bottle for two weeks of use label dry shampoos … since I started using dry shampoo (thanks to CF!) I’ve been able to wash my hair every other day and it’s SO much healthier, even in MN when it should be mandated that every U of M building should have a humidifier.
And I will attest to an earlier comment… Molly, your hair looks wonderful when you back comb it. But if I ever see you use this just for dry shampoo, I’ll probably punch you. 🙂
