I’ve received a few emails recently asking about how often a girl should wash her hair. I did a little research and it’s an interesting topic because there really seems to be a big divide in what people recommend.
So, how often should you wash your hair? Personally, I was always taught to shampoo my hair every day. Over the years, however, I’ve learned that daily washing really dries my hair out.
These days, because I get highlights and my hair is damaged, I only shampoo 3 or 4 times a week. This has definitely helped my hair a lot: it’s much less dried out without the constant shampooing and blow drying.
Celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, who does Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson’s hair, agrees that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. According to Oprah.com, Ken says that “certain hair types and textures only require washing once a week, where others work well washing 2 to 3 times a week.”
Thursday’s New York Times style section had an article about hair washing frequency, only to the extreme. Of Course I Washed My Hair Last Year (I’m Almost Certain) talked about how lots of women wash their hair just once a week and some only wash once a month! The average seems to be around 3 times a week. Apparently it’s trendy to spend less time on your hair.
As someone whose hair gets oily after just a few days, I can’t imagine only washing your hair once a month, but maybe it would work well for those with dry hair? The idea does sound tempting – who wouldn’t want to spend less time doing their hair each week? I just don’t know how it would really work for the average woman.
What are your opinions on this? Do you wash your hair every day or do you think once a week is best? Leave a comment and take the poll below! I want to hear what you think!
!!!! @Brigid Towey & @Everyone who has dry damaged hair !!!!
Ok I know just what you should do! My mom has the same exact problem and her hair is 10x better(She also dyes her hair alot)!
So when your in the shower, shampoo your hair only on the scalp, rhen add conditioner only on the end and secure with a pony-taill holder and leave in for about 2-3minutes.(do this for about a month with a moisturizing shampoo&conditioner)
You can blow-dry and straighten your hair, but dont use any heat protectant(i know sound crazy.lol)
Try to only wash your hair every other day.(like i said do this for about a month)
And sometimes it does depend on what like of straightner you use, I find it better when you use the flat irons that can be used on wet hair also.
Also try to trim your hair at the end of every month, this will get the dry dead ends off and will help your hair grow.
If you have any other questions let me know(:
Ok so I’ve read about 100 of these posts and can’t seem to come across anyone else with the same hair situation as me. So I have normal/fine naturally light brown/brown hair but have been highlighting it blonde for about 5 years. I get highlights every 4- 6 weeks because I hate dark roots. In addition I wash my hair every day, then blow dry it, then straighten it. The reason I do this is because I wake up every morning with the craziest hair, it isn’t greasy at all, it’s dry and feels like straw (maybe) and it’s just a mess almost looks like i got electrocuted. So every morning I brush it out then wash my hair and the cycle begins again…After I finish straightening it, it definitely looks better than when I woke up but it still feels dry and brittle and just dead! What should I do???
I have pretty tight curls, but they always want more moisture haha.
I usually wash my hair (but I never shampoo I use a cleansing conditioner) every other day. My hair is never oily. Some times I put oil in it to style with because it’s so dry. The only reason I was my hair as often as I do is because it starts getting really frizzy the second day. If I style it certain ways it can go longer. Like yesterday I twisted my hair a hair around my fingers when it was wet and it dried in corkscrews. Today they still look fine and they probably will tomorrow so I might not wash them until the day after tomorrow.
I strongly agree you shouldn’t wash your hair everyday and u should keep moisture in it and use the best shampoo. And conditioner on your texture of hair i will be posting a you tube video from salon to home stay tuned it will have alot of healthy hair tips and how to things i am a hairstylist Ladyz is my name and my salon is Zknowshair
Greasy hair …..I have really curly hair and After days four Of my hair not being washed I start to use talcon powder or dry shampoo this gives me a day or two till I need to wash it. I Wash my hair Once a week or twice If I wash it more then my hair becoms dry or goes straight .
For any type of hair it all about how you wash It what products you use and wether you wash it out propally and when you put any other products in your hair you know how to use them propally and not cause them to quicken your hair reliasing naturals oils also when applying products to your roots be carefull as It will quicken your hair to become greasy.
another Factor of greasy hair I pursitent Brushing of the hair this will make your hair greasyer so keep brushing your hair as low as possable
And help ask 🙂 x
Truth be told, I wash my hair from once to twice a week. I find that in the first day after washing my hair, I hate how frizzy and dry it feels. After the second, third or fourth day, my hair feels lovely, smooth and healthy. My hair only gets greasy after the fourth day of not washing it.
Hi V_personal

I’ve just started washing my hair every other day. I really do think it’s better for my hair.. Though I am looking in to getting a dry shampoo for the days I don’t. My hair gets really flat and greasy at the roots.
Hi,
I was just wondering, for a person with dry, damaged hair, like me, how much shampoo and conditioner should i use when washing my hair? I know that too much is not good for it, so how much is too much? also i use dry, damaged hair shampoo and conditioner. should i change what i am using?
i only wash my hair about twice a week, but sometimes only once. should i be washing it more often?
I have thick curly hair that I straighten pretty much 100% of the time. I used to wash my hair daily just as I was taught. I have recently been washing my hair 1-2 times a week and using a dry shampoo in between washings. My hair does normally get very oily by day 3-4 but with the shampoo I have been able to go a while longer
Ive relaxed my hair since 2weeks ago and they r bout 3inches.im african from west africa.is it possible for me to get dread now?if no wat to do?
Hi. This is kind of random, but I am in school to be a Surgical Technologist, with that comes a lot of Microbiology. Our hair harbors lots of germs and things, it attracts all types of different organisms and such and should be kept clean. I just can’t stand of thinking that I have all that stuff in my hair and not wash it. I think some people could get away with every two days, maybe three, but longer then that? I don’t know. I wash mine everyday, but I have oily hair at the roots. Sometimes I try to do every other day, but it’s hard for me. Anyways, just my opinion!
I want to wash my hair less bit what if you use products like heat protect? surely you have to wash it out or it’ll be greasy the next day???
@Violet
I am a teenager too. And I get oily hair also but I usually wash my hair every other day or i sometimes wont wash it for about 3 days. Whenever I dont wash my hair i usually just put it up in a bun. Or if I’m going somewhere that day I’ll just wash my roots with just shampoo.
Here are some tips thats you can do :
1.Wash your hair every other day
2.The day that you dont wash it put it in a bun
3.If you dont want to put it up, just wash your hair with shampoo
I hope those tips help you(:
And if you have any other questions please ask!
What about teenagers? I’m a teenage girl (with really long hair) and my hair gets really oily about 10 hours after I shower in the morning. I shower EVERY morning, because if I didn’t, it would feel gross and I would look very unclean.
Is it bad that I shower every day? I’ve never had any problems with my hair drying out or anything.
