I’ve received a few emails recently asking about how often a girl should wash her hair. I did a little research and it’s an interesting topic because there really seems to be a big divide in what people recommend.
So, how often should you wash your hair? Personally, I was always taught to shampoo my hair every day. Over the years, however, I’ve learned that daily washing really dries my hair out.
These days, because I get highlights and my hair is damaged, I only shampoo 3 or 4 times a week. This has definitely helped my hair a lot: it’s much less dried out without the constant shampooing and blow drying.
Celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, who does Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson’s hair, agrees that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. According to Oprah.com, Ken says that “certain hair types and textures only require washing once a week, where others work well washing 2 to 3 times a week.”
Thursday’s New York Times style section had an article about hair washing frequency, only to the extreme. Of Course I Washed My Hair Last Year (I’m Almost Certain) talked about how lots of women wash their hair just once a week and some only wash once a month! The average seems to be around 3 times a week. Apparently it’s trendy to spend less time on your hair.
As someone whose hair gets oily after just a few days, I can’t imagine only washing your hair once a month, but maybe it would work well for those with dry hair? The idea does sound tempting – who wouldn’t want to spend less time doing their hair each week? I just don’t know how it would really work for the average woman.
What are your opinions on this? Do you wash your hair every day or do you think once a week is best? Leave a comment and take the poll below! I want to hear what you think!
I wish I didn’t have to wash my hair every day but if I don’t my fringe looks really greasy which is so annoying but oh well 😛 x

Hi there!
Since your hair is dry, I recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment. Now I know what your thinking, you would need to go out and buy something.Nope! All you need is your own conditioner that’s already in your shower, but I recommend getting the Aussie 3 minute miracle, if you has access to it. But regular conditioner will do the trick. So go ahead and wash your hair with shampoo, rinse it out with warm water, then squeeze out most of the water and put in your conditioner, focusing on the ends. Then grab a plastic bag and wrap it around your head, leaving it in for as long as you want. Then rinse with cold water and air dry. And keep doing this several times a week, and since your hair is dry,use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner:) hope this helped!
Zoran, I am also a guy and have some experience with this. One thing as a guy is that it’s almost expected for us to wash our hair everyday, but guys and girls hair aren’t that different (pretty much the only difference is the possibility of male pattern baldness)
What you said is true and has happened to me, the more frequently you wash your hair, the more it greasy it gets. This can be because since you are washing it more it’s stripping the oil so your hair tries to replace it more.
You gradually have to wash it less and less and let your hair and scalp adjust to washing it less often.
I usually wash mine now once every other day or every 2 days.
I wash my hair every saturday. Its just so much easier. If my hairs oily before that i put my hair up. Its great. Oh and i reccomend using Herbal E. Its so good for your hair. Leaves it soft and it helps your hair stay clean looking and especially helps dry hair. For any hair type but its great! And for when you scruch your hair i recommend Tresseme mouse. Hair gel is better for the natural curly hair that tends to puff up a lot. But for anyone else mouse is great. I have thin medium hair.
I wash my hair every two weeks and I put deep conditioners n cut ends my hair. My haiti hasnt stopped growing , looks, feels, and smells better
I am African-American and french teenager. I have kinky hair, afro status. My hair is naturally dry and I wear it in indiviuals. I’ve never chemically altered my hair (I press it for special occasions). I wash my hair once a month. The only reason I wash my hair is because my braids get fuzy. I’ve gone 1 1/2 months until my braids got dirty. It’s pretty much impossibl to think of washing my hair weekly (let alone dayly). Washing my hair that often would just make my hair extra fuzy and extremely dry.
Once a week Is fine with me
I always wash my hair every time I take a bath, I shampoo my hair each time I shower even if it means I’m taking a bath 2 or 3 times a day. I’m very blessed to actually have a hair like these because it’s not dry and I never seem to have split ends. The reason I shampoo all the time is because of the weather we have here in the Philippines, it’s very hot in here and we get sweaty that may cause odor even for our hair.
I am African American and during the summer I wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week. I do not have a relaxer in my hair and its about 16 inches long. My summer time styles consist of afro puffs, wet and wavy, or wash and go styles that require frequent washing. However during the winter time I only wash my hair once or twice a month. My hair is extremely dry during this time of the year so i have my stylist to flat iron my hair. My hair stays straight and does not get oily. the longer i keep the style the drier my scalp and hair is. If i attempted to wash, dry, flat iron my own hair, it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.
okay, so not going to lie i always used to wash my hair every day, the though of not was just unbearable, however im going to admit that recently (last few months) i will only was it once a week and dont use any heat on it. and my hair never look greasy.
I’ve got very long and thick hair (almost to my butt lolol :P) Because it’s so long, i wash i 2-3 times a week basicly because it just take forever to dry! hihi 😛
hi my hair fall’s when i brush my hair i don’t know why and in a week i use shampoo about 2 or 1 or maybe 3 well yea so i don’t get it even if i wash my hair it fall s out that is werid well not actually i want to know why .
If it’s wet, it’s clean. Whether we’re talking clothes, hair, skin or whatever. Words to live by.

I have to wash my hair everyday because my roots and bangs get greasy fast but the rest of my hair is dry and frizzy. I have thick, wavy hair. Anyone have any ideas on how to enhance my natural waves without weighing it down with a lot of products and making it look greasy.
