There are people in life that we look up to and turn to for advice; a mother, sister or even a friend. But I have always looked up to women of music and their songs to give me advice through tough times. Here are a few things that I have learned from famous divas of music!
Table of Contents
1. Whitney Houston
“I’m a person who has life, who wants to live. And I always have..”
Whitney Houston’s music taught me to love myself and to live life the way I want to. Her song “Greatest Love of All” has always been a source of inspiration for me. She tells her audience that the greatest love she has is for herself and explains that she learned how to take care of herself and to always be in charge of herself. This motto has always helped me carry on through rough times and has made me a stronger woman.
2. Britney Spears
“I dress the way I want. I don’t pretend to be someone I’m not.”
Britney Spears was the pop diva of my generation. She radiated joy and always seemed to be so perfect. However, after the head-shaving events of 2007, many people thought her career was over. But these days, she’s better than ever. The last show of her Piece of Me Las Vegas residency broke the record for the highest-grossing single concert in a theater residency ever in Las Vegas!
What I learned from watching Britney over the years through her ups and downs is to never give up. Also, it’s always okay to start over. Even when you hit a low point in your life, there will always be a way that you can change that and work towards finding happiness again.
3. Mariah Carey
“If you see me as just the princess then you misunderstand who I am and what I have been through.”
Mariah taught me to never let anyone or anything hold me back. In 2018, Mariah opened up about her battle with Bipolar Disorder and how she won’t let it control her life. She shows us that it’s okay to have a mental illness and to be open about who you are and to not let anything stop you from reaching your goals.
4. Beyonce
“In my videos, I always want to be a powerful woman. That’s my mission.”
I, like many, many girls, have looked up to Beyonce for years. She exuded an air of confidence and was one of the first artists who showed me how to be a powerful woman. What I learned from watching Beyonce is to be an independent woman and to embrace my inner Sasha Fierce. Beyonce is one of the hardest working women in music and she inspires me to have a strong work ethic in my own life.
5. Cher
“I’ve always taken risks, and never worried what the world might really think of me.”
Cher has always been a woman who is unapologetically herself. She wears what she wants to wear, does what she wants to do, and never lets anyone try and tell her any different. Cher can teach you to be who you want to be and be vocal about your opinions. Sometimes we’re told that we should keep our mouths shut but especially in this harsh political climate it’s important to speak your mind about issues you care about. Cher also taught me to push through hardships in her song “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from the movie Burlesque. It taught me to never back down even when people are trying to push you down.
