You know those days – the ones where you roll out of bed (after hitting the snooze button too many times), stumble into your closet, and have no idea what to wear? Our series Easy Outfit Formulas is here to help! Every other week, I’ll feature two items (which you might own already) that can be paired into outfits for those days when you need some quick and easy inspiration.
It’s back! Easy Outfit Formulas is starting up again in preparation for the back-to-school season, when getting back into a hectic academic schedule can leave you pressed for time in the morning. But not to fear – just pin or bookmark your favorite Outfit Formula posts to refer back to on those extra-busy days.
This week, I wanted to share a formula that’s perfect for the summer-to-fall transition: cropped tops and maxi skirts. This trendy combination is great because it’s easily adaptable for transitional weather. It also gives you the option of bearing a bit of skin or not, depending on how high on your waist you wear your skirt.

Elegant Summer Evening
Product Info: Top – Mango, Skirt – Forever 21, Heels – Daily Look, Bracelet – Urbanog | Hair Photo: ELLE
This look is romantic, minimalist, and, in my opinion, perfect for a warm weather date night. All it takes is a soft, flowy maxi skirt in a delicate print and a white sleeveless cropped blouse. The accessories shouldn’t compete with the rest of the look, so keep it simple with leg-elongating ankle strap heels and a twisted gold cuff. For the finishing touch, style your hair in a loose and effortless braid.
Eclectic Cool
Product Info: Tee – Delia’s, Skirt – Kohl’s, Sneakers – 6pm, Bag – Urban Outfitters, Bracelets – Wet Seal, Beanie – Nordstrom
This next outfit is ultra-cool and trendy, with maybe just a touch of grunge, so it would be ideal for a class-to-night-out scenario (maybe hitting a rock concert on a Friday night?). I love the eclectic pairing of a casual cropped graphic tee and a more dressy sheer black maxi skirt. A pair of purple hi-top sneakers adds color and makes the look more fun and youthful.
Keep the accessories simple with a sleek black backpack and silver bangles. If the weather is cooler, polish off the look with a slouchy black beanie.
Boho Autumn
Product Info: Sweater – Lord & Taylor, Skirt – Daily Look, Boots – Sears, Bag – Pacsun, Ring – Nordstrom, Hat – Hot Topic
This is a super stylish yet relaxed ensemble that’s perfect for fall – wear it while flea market hunting, attending a relaxed outdoor concert, or just to class. Simply pair a flowy burgundy maxi skirt with a cropped black sweater, then slip on buckled ankle boots for a rustic touch (and a bit of height). Accessorize with a turquoise ring, a printed drawstring bag, and a floppy felt hat to channel that bohemian, “free spirit” vibe.

LOVE outfit #2!
Does anyone know how to do the hairstyle from the first outfit (or know the name of it so I can youtube it)? If I master it then I’m definitely gonna use it as my “go to” hairstyle.
i really love the last two outfits. the autumn look with some funky leggings or socks can totally get me through winter!!!
If you could find a hair tutorial for loomnumber one, that would be super helpful! Love the look, and I’d love to be able to complete it with the updo
