If you keep up with award shows, you’ll know that the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night. (On a Monday. Weird, we know!) The best TV shows were honored at the event, and the biggest stars in television rocked the red carpet in style. We have a bunch of amazing fashion to discuss, so let’s get right to it.

Top 5 Best-Dressed
In no particular order, here are my picks for best-dressed at this year’s Emmys:
Claire Danes in Givenchy

Red dresses were everywhere on the Emmys red carpet, but Claire Danes wore my favorite crimson gown of the night. Between the pretty embellished neckline, trendy cut-outs, and matching belt, this lacy gown had a lot going on, but Claire took a fashion risk and it worked. She kept the red theme going with ruby earrings and a matte red lip, then wore her hair in a loosely pulled back updo.
Taylor Schilling in Zuhair Murad

Orange Is the New Black star Taylor Schilling channeled Old Hollywood in an extremely modern way in this Zuhair Murad gown. The intricate beading has a Deco-inspired feel, while the high neckline and racerback looks so fresh. Taylor described the hue of her dress as a “non-color” on the red carpet, but we think that neutral color continues the ultra-modern vibe. A low chignon, an edgy jeweled ear cuff, and a mother of pearl box clutch added the finishing touches to this ensemble.
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier

Lizzy Caplan stunned last night in Donna Karan Atelier. The beautiful halter neck and side cut-outs had a subtle sexiness, but what really made this gown a stand out was the long white train. Pairing black with white continues the be a hot trend, and Lizzy showed us how it’s done with this glam gown. Neil Lane jewelry, a classic updo, and a smokey eye completed this classy yet cool look.
Heidi Klum in Zac Posen

Project Runway‘s Heidi Klum was the epitome of effortlessly chic in this gorgeous Zac Posen gown. She usually shows a ton of skin on the red carpet, so it was refreshing to see her in a crewneck dress with flutter-sleeves. Not only did it fit her like a glove, but I loved the way the draping came down in the back. Heidi continued the easygoing vibe with beachy waves, then created some fashion-forward contrast by pairing the coral-hued gown with green-and-white jeweled statement earrings.
Kate Mara in J. Mendel

Kate Mara is one of my favorite red carpet fashion risk takers, and she didn’t disappoint at last night’s Emmys. From the asymmetrical skirt and draped bodice to the pearl embellished neckline and strappy back, everything about this J. Mendel gown just looks so cool. The House of Cards actress didn’t skimp in the accessory and beauty departments, either. Black-and-white platform sandals, an oval clutch, and a black mani rounded out this showstopping getup.
Other Notable Ensembles
Kerry Washington in Prada

Kerry Washington is always one to watch on the red carpet, and last night was no exception. The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee turned heads in a strapless orange Prada gown with a thigh-high slit that revealed a crystal-embellished navy mini skirt. Accessorizing her sparkling gown with navy satin pumps, a matching clutch, and a beautiful smoky makeup look, Kerry stood out in the best possible way.
Sarah Hyland in Christian Siriano

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland rocked a fun, flirty ensemble at last night’s ceremony. Her Christian Siriano look consisted of a coral silk faille ball skirt and an open-back white crop top, accessorized with Jimmy Choo heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Fun fact: Sarah was styled by Brad Goreski, who you might remember from The Rachel Zoe Project! We have to hand it to Brad: This was a total fashion win.
Julia Roberts in Elie Saab

Julia Roberts arrived fashionably late for the red carpet, proving, of course, that the best things in life are worth waiting for. Usually known for her understated, classic frocks, Julia took a bit of a risk last night in a short, sparkly Elie Saab creation. If you ask us, the risk paid off: From her peep-toe Christian Louboutin heels to her tousled waves, Julia looked absolutely incredible.
Natalie Dormer in J. Mendel

Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer is always on fashion’s cutting edge (remember her half-shaved head?), so it was nice to see her in something more toned-down last night. She wore a simple, color-blocked orange and brown J. Mendel frock, accessorized with Sophia Webster shoes and Fred Leighton jewels. As much as we liked her dress, we were even more obsessed with her voluminous waves – she wins our award for best hair of the night. What do you think of Natalie’s look?
Least Favorite Look
Unfortunately, we can’t love everything. Here’s one look I simply didn’t care for at this year’s Emmy Awards.
Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli Couture

When I first spotted Lena Dunham‘s Emmys look on E!, I only saw it from the waist up. I actually thought the combination of a Peter Pan collared blouse and a light pink tulle skirt looked fashion-forward, but then I caught a glimpse of the rest of the skirt. This Giambattista Valli couture look was just too much. Too much tulle, too much volume, and (gasp!) too much pink. On a much more positive note, I really am loving how Lena looks with blonde hair… are you?
