We all have our classic outfit pairings that we reach for when we aren’t sure what to wear. Skirt and top outfits are one such example.
However simple this combo may seem, the top-and-skirt pairing is not just limited to one style. There are so many potential variations on the top-and-skirt outfit — and today I’m here to remind you of a few of them. Today, I’ll be sharing 20 cute skirt and top outfits to inspire your next ensemble. Let’s get right to it!
Table of Contents
Off-the-Shoulder Top and Denim Skirt
Products: Top – Bloomingdale’s, Denim Skirt – H&M, Espadrille Sneakers – Macy’s, Sunglasses – Urban Outfitters, Crossbody – Nordstrom, Lipstick – Kylie Cosmetics
This take on the skirt and top outfit is so on-trend for summer. A ruffle-sleeve off-the-shoulder top looks super cute with a trendy denim skirt.
Pair the outfit with espadrille platform sneakers and a red crossbody and you’ve got a totally of-the-moment ensemble. Add round sunglasses and red lipstick for extra pops of color and interest.
Baseball Tee and Sequin Skirt
Products: Baseball Tee – Nordstrom, Sequin Skirt – Missguided, Necklace – Nordstrom Rack, Sneakers – Zappos
Mixing casual items with glamorous pieces is a great way to wear a top and skirt. The tomboyish vibe of a baseball tee with black raglan sleeves looks great when set against a girly pink sequin skirt that has floral embroidery.
You can also mix tomboyish and girly accessories: A chain necklace with black beads is glam, while coral sneakers give your outfit a dash of that sporty vibe.
Striped Top and Floral Skirt
Products: Striped Tee – Target, Floral Skirt – Forever 21, Flats – Macy’s, Bow Hairtie – Nordstrom, Bracelet Set – Kohl’s, Bag – Target
Mixing stripes and florals is one of our favorite ways to mix patterns, and it’s an easy strategy to make a skirt and top outfit more interesting. A classic 3/4-sleeve striped tee looks stylish with a summer-y floral skirt in a cheery red color. Brown flats work with the top and skirt, and would look good with basically any other outfit you might wear. Finally, a mini lavender bow crossbody is both trendy and girly. If your style is extra girly, you can add a bow and pearls too.
Pink Top and Red Skirt
Products: Tee – Hanes, Skirt – Forever 21, Oxfords – Modcloth, Necklace – Kohl’s, Bracelet – Old Navy, Bag – Target
Isn’t it fun to wear a top-and-skirt combo that breaks the rules? A light pink tee paired with a bold red skirt looks modern and unexpected. (We’re not followers of the “don’t wear red with pink” rule — for us, the combo is in regular rotation!)
Anything with flowers is trendy right now, so let’s add a statement necklace and bracelet with floral detailing. Keep the rest of your look simple with brown oxfords and a satchel handbag.
Graphic Tee and Sporty Skirt
Products: Tee – Nordstrom, Skirt – rue21, Sneakers – DSW, Earrings – Kohl’s, Baseball Cap – Gap, Backpack – Target
We all know that athleisure fashion is trending in a big way, so why not do an athleisure take on the skirt and top outfit?
An Adidas tee and a varsity side stripe skirt are good starting points to prove that not all top-and-skirt combos have to be girly. A washed baseball cap and blush Puma sneakers amp up the athleisure factor. An olive backpack is practical and a great choice for a sporty look. Finally, gold hoop earrings add some sass to the outfit.
Cardigan and Skirt
Products: Cardigan – Target, Tank – Nordstrom, Skirt – Forever 21, Belt – J.Crew, Flats – Old Navy, Earrings – Modcloth, Watch – Nordstrom Rack
Cardigans go great with skirts and dresses and this classic outfit is proof. A cardigan paired with a skirt is feminine and chic. Layer a mint cardigan over a white lace tank and pair it with a navy polka dot midi skirt.
Match the color of the skirt with girly flower earrings and navy flats. A watch is a fun detail to add to the look, while a metallic skinny belt gives the outfit some interest.
Flowy Tank and Maxi Skirt
Products: Tank – Old Navy, Skirt – Target, Sandals – American Eagle, Bangles – Kohl’s, Necklace – Guess Factory, Hat – Target, Sunglasses – Target
No top-and-skirt outfit is more bohemian than a flowy swing tank and a paisley maxi skirt. The cream color of the tank offsets the muted color and bold pattern of the skirt. (Half-tuck the top in to accent your waist.) Gladiator sandals are always in style and these neutral colored ones are comfy to walk in. Plus, they look great with the tank and skirt.
We’re sure you own some gold jewelry (who doesn’t love gold?), so gold textured bangles and a trendy tassel necklace are perfect choices to add some pizzazz to the outfit. Protect yourself from the sun with a floppy sun hat and white sunglasses.
Sequin Top and Lace Skirt
Products: Top – Last Call, Skirt – Macy’s, Necklace – Nordstrom Rack, Sandals – DSW, Sunglasses – H&M, Bag – Urban Outfitters
How about mixing sequins and lace? It may seem difficult at first to mix those feminine textures, but here they’re mixed in a casual way that works for daytime. A flower sequin t-shirt is a great way to wear sequins during the day. Pair it with a ruffled lace midi skirt for texture contrast.
It’s still summer, so let’s add some modern summer-y touches to make the ensemble more wearable, namely round sunglasses for a bit of a ’70s vibe, light blue denim slides with a bow to add a little more texture, and a trendy straw crossbody.
Leather Jacket and Lace Skirt
Products: Jacket – New York and Company, Tank – Modcloth, Skirt – Belk, Boots – Charlotte Russe, Ring – Macy’s
This outfit will help you transition into fall. It’s an unexpected look because it mixes two disparate textures: leather and lace. The leather jacket looks great with the white crochet lace skirt. A plain grey tank provides balance while studded wrap combat boots give the look some edge. You could also do mules for a more ladylike feel.
White Tee and Black and White Skirt
Products: Tee – Gap, Skirt – Target, Flats – DSW, Necklace – Francesca’s, Headband – Francesca’s
We all know that a white tee, no matter the style, goes with everything. Here’s an outfit that pairs a white crewneck tee with a black and white button-down skirt.
Since we’re working with a black and white palette, it’s easy to mix prints. Stripes and polka dots look great with each other, so match a black and white polka dot headband to the colors of the striped skirt. Wearing the headband with the a-line skirt gives off a ’50s vibe. Finally, light blue pointed-toe flats add a much-needed pop of color to the look.
White Graphic Tee and Gingham Ruffle-Wrap Skirt
Products: Tee – Levi’s, Skirt – Lulu’s, Sneakers – Old Navy, Earrings – ASOS, Headband – American Eagle, Bracelet – Belk
Pairing a logo tee with a gingham ruffle wrap skirt is a trendy, street-chic top-and-skirt outfit combo to try. The combo looks great when paired with classic white sneakers and pearl drop earrings. Gingham is trending like crazy right now, and a gingham wrap headband matches the skirt. A rose gold bracelet adds another dash of trendiness. Wear this to brunch or a day spent shopping with your best friends.
Yellow Textured Top and Navy Printed Skirt
Products: Top – Nordstrom, Skirt – Forever 21, Ring – Macy’s, Necklace – Anthropologie, Earrings – Nordstrom, Bracelet – Nordstrom Rack, Clutch – DSW, Heels – DSW
Want a top-and-skirt combo for a night out? Try a yellow lace flutter-sleeve top paired with a navy polka dot wrap skirt. The cheery color of the top contrasts with the more muted color on the skirt.
For a night out, go with as many or as few accessories as you like — here, I’ve included a few different options that you can pick and choose from. Gold statement earrings will draw attention to your face, while an orange bib necklace looks great with the yellow top. Add a stone statement ring and/or a gold Dorelia Lapis cuff for a little more gold and bold sparkle.
A silver metallic clutch and embellished heels add even more sparkle to the look and complete the night out ensemble.
Denim-on-Denim
Products: Jacket – Boohoo, Skirt – Macy’s, Tee – Brooks Brothers, Booties – DSW, Fanny Pack – Macy’s, Sunglasses – H&M, Fedora – Nordstrom
Almost everyone has at least one denim item in their closet, so denim-on-denim makes for a great top-and-skirt outfit combo, especially if you mix in a v-neck tee, which you definitely already own. It helps if you wear two denim items of different washes, like this light wash denim jacket from Boohoo and a dark denim skirt (which has rips). Neutral ankle boots go with anything, and these ones from DSW are a great choice for your denim-on-denim look.
Fanny packs and tinted sunglasses are trending right now, so they’re great extras to add. Finish off the look with a straw fedora.
Turtleneck and Button-Front Corduroy Skirt
Products: Sweater – American Eagle, Skirt – Forever 21, Boots – DSW, Hat – Target, Lipstick – Target, Mascara – Ulta
It may not be fall yet, but if you ask us, it’s never too early to start planning your fall wardrobe. A cozy turtleneck sweater and a button-front corduroy skirt in an autumn-y hue form a great top-and-skirt outfit combo for fall. Over-the-knee boots look great with the outfit and the floral embroidery on this pair makes them super trendy. A black sun hat is a great idea for the summer-to-fall transition. Mascara and red lips make the outfit look extra chic.
Band Tee and Tulle Skirt
Products: Tee – Urban Outfitters, Skirt – Charlotte Russe, Mules – DSW, Choker – Forever 21, Bracelet – Amazon, Satchel – TJ Maxx
Another way to wear a top with a skirt is to pair a rocker-chic item with a more princess-y item — we’re talking serious contrast with this look. A band tee and a girly skirt is a very common street-chic look (hello, Carrie Bradshaw vibes) that proves band tees are not just limited to denim bottoms. Similarly, tulle skirts aren’t limited to just girly tops.
This skirt may look like it’s pink, but it’s actually mauve, a very pale shade of purple. It looks great with this classic Rolling Stones band tee. While we’re mixing different style vibes, we can even mix edgy jewelry with feminine jewelry. A faux suede o-ring choker from Forever 21 gives off grunge vibes and contrasts nicely with a pretty, whimsical rose gold charm bracelet. Finish off the look with on-trend loafer mules and a pastel green satchel.
Navy Blazer, Striped Tee, and Plaid Skirt
Products: Blazer – Target, Tee – Old Navy, Skirt – Forever 21, Tights – Target, Oxford Wedges – DSW, Stud Earrings – Nordstrom, Handbag – ALDO
Here’s a look that will get you excited for fall. It has a dark blue blazer, a striped tee, and a plaid skirt. Plaid is a great print for fall and stripes go with everything. Additionally, black tights go with everything, especially with the combo above (or you can forgo the tights if they aren’t your thing).
This look might seem fit for a schoolgirl, but a clear metallic tote bag and crystal stud earrings keep it modern. This outfit would also look great with glasses (prescription or non).
Lace Top and Lace Skirt
Products: Top – Macy’s, Skirt – ASOS, Necklace – GUESS, Slip-Ons – Vans, Clutch – DSW
Another way you can wear a top and skirt is to mix lace with lace on both halves of the look. The easiest way to rock this look is to wear lace pieces in two different colors; in this case, white on top and pink on the bottom. This bell sleeve top and scalloped edge skirt mix two pieces of the same texture with interesting details.
You don’t really need much in the way of accessories since this top-and-skirt combo is pretty bold, but you can add a layered necklace for a little more dimension. You could go with heels for a night out look, or keep the look simple with white slip-ons for day.
Off-The-Shoulder Top and Pencil Skirt
Products: Top – Charlotte Russe, Pencil Skirt – Forever 21, Heels – Lulu’s, Earrings – H&M, Clutch – Missguided
It’s fun to mix unexpected items together, especially an off-the-shoulder top and a leather pencil skirt. The feminine crochet top contrasts with the office-appropriate faux leather skirt. This combo looks great for a night out, so let’s add nude suede heels. Big earrings are very trendy, and big silver earrings add a pop of fun to your look. Finish with a snakeskin clutch.
Mint Top and Polka Dot Skirt
Products: Top – Unique Vintage, Skirt – Forever 21, Flats – Old Navy, Headband – Forever 21, Earrings – Forever 21, Ring – Swarovski, Bracelet – J.Crew Factory
Would you like to add a vintage vibe to your top and skirt combo? Try a sleeveless mint blouse tucked into a flared polka dot skirt. Add on pink ballet flats for an extra hint of ’50s style. Throw in some sparkle with an embellished headband, a rose gold ring with diamonds, and faux pearl and rhinestone earrings. Add on a gold link bracelet if you’re feeling extra.
Sweater, Button-Down, and Pencil Skirt
Products: Tee – L.L. Bean, Button-Down – Express, Pencil Skirt – Kohl’s, Pumps – DSW, Earrings – Kohl’s, Ring – JCPenney, Necklace – Kohl’s
A sweater, button-down, and a pencil skirt is a great top-and-skirt combo for work and the look above would be a bold work look for a fashion-forward workplace.
Wearing a mint green top over a lilac button-down is a great way to mix pastels. The tee can also be worn alone if desired. A dark purple pencil skirt adds some monochromatic action to the button-down and tones down the look. Pretty lilac pumps match the button-down.
Let’s add even more sophistication with jewelry — you can pick and choose from these pieces, depending on the look you’re going for. A sparkly bib necklace looks chic peeking out from the collar. A cocktail ring makes a statement, while flower pearl stud earrings are quirky yet simple.
