From the costumes to the set, from the words of the script to the movements of the actors, everything on stage tells a story. Stage-Inspired Fashion explores ways to add a little dramatic flair to your style.
I recently saw The Woodsman at New World Stages, and I was blown away. The play tells the story of how the Tin Man lost his heart.

Behind the Scenes
Based on the writings of L. Frank Baum, created by James Ortiz, and developed by Strangemen & Co., The Woodsman tells the origin story of the Tin Man. Originally a Munchkin named Nick Chopper, he lives under the rule of the Wicked Witch of the East, chopping wood in the forest like his father before him. After he falls in love with Nimmee, the Witch’s slave, and helps her escape, the Witch puts a terrible curse on him.
The Woodsman is truly an ensemble show. Aside from an opening monologue and a closing song, the play is wordless; the story is told through pantomime, with beautiful puppets, creative sound effects, and haunting violin music. Whether the ensemble members are participating in the action, manipulating puppets, or providing sound, their precise movements and facial expressions are captivating. They are the heart of the production.
I’ve created three outfits based on the play’s characters. Keep reading to see them all!
The Munchkins
Products: Sweater, Overalls, Boots, Heart Necklace, Axe Necklace, Headband
The Munchkins only wear blue, but they wear different shades, patterns, and textures to make their outfits distinct. To fit in with them, start with a light blue ribbed sweater and add darker blue twill overalls. Get ready to run through the forest in canvas boots, and keep your hair out of the way with a denim headband. Pay tribute to Nick’s caring parents with a set of necklaces: for his father, a golden axe, and for his mother, a bright red heart.
The Witch
Products: Dress, Cardigan, Heels, Necklace, Hat
This burgundy dress and matching fringed cardigan mimic the Witch’s flowing clothes and give the outfit a sense of movement. A resin crow skull necklace represents her crow spies, and a wide-brimmed black hat provides a shield from the dangerous light of day. Finish the look with the Witch’s signature silver heels.
The Woodsman
Products: Top, Vest, Jeans, Flats, Bracelet
For an outfit inspired by the Woodsman himself, throw on a silver halter top, a longline gray vest, and silver flats. Distressed tomgirl jeans reflect the Woodsman’s deteriorating state, and the light blue harkens back to his origins. A thick copper bangle adds a touch of metal and the color of rust.
Epilogue
The Woodsman is a testament to the power of the stories we can tell with our bodies. That’s the heart of this column: telling stories.
