Fashion Recap: 2017 Grammy Awards Red Carpet

Beyonce skipped the red carpet but we still have fashion to discuss, I guess.

It wouldn’t be the Grammys without an extra large side of controversy, and last night’s 2017 Grammy Awards ceremony stayed true to form. A lot went down last night – from major performance sound issues to alleged shade-throwing on the red carpet to, well, I’ll just let you watch Adele’s acceptance speech for Album of the Year yourself:

(Have you stopped crying yet? Okay, I’ll wait.)

So. It’s safe to say that the red carpet fashion at the 2017 Grammys, though eye-popping, was the least-discussed aspect of the night. However, you know we’re always ready to talk style here at CF, so let’s show the clothes some appreciation.

Below, I’ve listed my favorite and least favorite looks from the 2017 Grammys red carpet:

Top Five Best Dressed

Rihanna in Armani Privé

Question: Does Rihanna ever get it wrong, fashion-wise? Answer: No. No, she does not.

Fashion’s reigning queen was in typical form last night, hitting the red carpet late in an incredible two piece Armani Prive number. You guys, she made a sparkly orange halter bra top look glam. I officially want one (and could never pull it off). RiRi accessorized with fistfuls of Chopard and David Webb jewelry and carried a Roger Vivier clutch. She also carried a diamond-encrusted flask because, well, SHE IS RIHANNA AND SHE CAN.

Chrissy Teigen in Roberto Cavalli

Our BFF wishlist topper Chrissy Teigen looked beyond incredible last night in an edgy black Roberto Cavalli lace-up gown. Some commentators noted that her gown had Fifty Shades Darker vibes, and while I’m not sure if that’s what Chrissy intended, her look was hot enough to make me consider seeing that movie.

Chrissy topped off her ensemble with a Jimmy Choo clutch and shoes. She also wore Coomi jewels, though they weren’t the same pieces she hilariously made husband John Legend remove for her at the end of the night.

Charli XCX in Vivienne Westwood

Although I love her cool-girl style, I don’t normally think of Charli XCX as a red carpet queen. However, girlfriend looked so fancy last night. Wearing a crimson Vivienne Westwood sweetheart sheath gown, Charli oozed glamorous bombshell vibes, while also appearing fresh and fun. She completed her look with red satin pumps and lust-worthy safety pin earrings, also by Vivienne Westwood.

Demi Lovato in Julien Macdonald

Demi Lovato looked all kinds of gleamy and gorgeous in a long sleeved gold and beige woven Julien Macdonald gown featuring a major front cutout. She accessorized her ultra-sexy ensemble with David Yurman jewelry and tousled beach waves.

To me, Demi is one of those stars that gets more gorgeous every year. She’s never looked better than she does right now! I’m glad to see her exploring her style and looking – to name drop her single – oh-so confident.

Paris Jackson in Balmain

It girl alert! Paris Jackson officially hit our style radar for the first time last night, rocking the red carpet in a sparkly, slithery Balmain number. Playing to the fashion girl crowd, she accessorized her look with major suede platforms, a holographic clutch, and quirky, mismatched jewelry.

I can’t wait to see more of her style in the years to come – Paris is definitely a fashionista to watch.

Other Noteworthy Looks

Adele in Givenchy Haute Couture

You guys, I practically shrieked when I saw Adele in a color other than black! Known for rocking dark looks on the red carpet, the singer stunned in green Givenchy Couture. From its micropleats to its woven bodice to its embellished sleeves, Adele’s gown had a lot going on, but it somehow worked. The Album of the Year winner accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

J.Lo in Ralph & Russo Couture

So I added and removed J.Lo‘s look from my Top Five Best Dressed approximately 17 times. And I still can’t decide whether this look or Paris Jackson’s look should be in the top five. (Tell me what you think in the comments!)

Here’s the only reason I didn’t adore this: The crazy neck bow thing. I like it on principle – the dress would be too basic without it – however something about it clashed with J.Lo’s vibe. It was too prim and cutesy, and it looked weird next to her long, flowing hairstyle. Would it have looked better if she wore her hair in an updo? The world will never know.

Everything else about this look was flawless – those sparkly Louboutins! The matching claw nails! That glittery-gorgeous Jlc bag! I just didn’t get the bow. Please, help me make sense of this in the comments, guys. I need your opinions.

Camila Cabello in Miri Couture

Newly separated from Fifth Harmony, solo artist Camila Cabello appeared as a presenter at last night’s awards. She gave off major princess (or, better yet, Queen Elsa “Let It Go”) vibes in a shimmering floral ballgown by Miri Couture. From top to bottom, this look was sweet and perfectly suited to a young star breaking out on her own.

It will be interesting to see where Camila’s style goes next, now that she’s free to express herself as a solo act. We’ll definitely be watching!

Halsey in Christian Wijnants

Halsey turned heads when she showed up last night in this cobalt satin getup that – let’s be honest – could have benefited from some quality time with a steamer.

Appearing on E!’s Live from the Red Carpet, Halsey told Giuliana Rancic that her look was “a little TLC, a little Aaliyah, ’90s R&B.” Zipping exactly none of her track jacket’s zipper to show off an Ippolita necklace, among other, um, assets, Halsey certainly achieved the “sexy [yet] androgynous” vibe she sought.

Least Favorite Look

Lady Gaga in custom Chrome Hearts

This was a tough choice, so hear me out on my reasoning before you tell me I’m crazy. (Or just TL;DR and tell me I’m crazy — it’s the internet, after all.)

First of all, I thought Lady Gaga looked gorgeous — her hair, her makeup, that tan, those insane boots! This is a look that only she could rock. That being said, it was also, dare I say, predictable and boring. On anyone else, this getup would have set the Twitterverse ablaze, but on Gaga, well, it looked like any old thing that she’d wear on stage. We’re all going to forget about this one.

This, I think, is the problem with Gaga’s red carpet style. We’ve truly seen her do it all — meat dress, elaborate chicken headpiece, egg “vessel” — so nothing wows us anymore. I’ve been saying this for a while, but it really hit home last night. And it makes me sorta sad. Do you guys agree?

Okay, can we please discuss?

Enough with what I think – I want to hear from you! Please, help me make sense of J.Lo’s dress, Rihanna’s orange bra, and Gaga’s desensitizing fashion nature in the comments. Who was your Grammys best dressed? Did you spend the whole show crying like I did? Scroll on down and let’s talk in the comments.

  1. J.Lo over Paris but she should have worn her hair in a low sleek ponytail on the opposite side; or messy fishtail. Something that wouldn’t detract from the bow, any updo would have made her look like a wannabe English royal lol

    • Yess, sleek pony to the side would have been perfect. I wish J.Lo would rock a messy fishtail – I feel like her hair is always perfectly polished.
