Last night we witnessed what will likely go down as the craziest Oscars ceremony of all time. (Alright, I fell asleep before things went off the rails but I caught up this morning!) The 2017 Academy Awards will–unfortunately–be remembered for the Best Picture SNAFU to end all SNAFUs. While everyone involved handled it well (or at least, as best they could), the last few crazy minutes of the ceremony will live on in infamy.
Of course, with the Oscars comes ALL THE BEST FASHION and we will not let the fashion get lost in the envelope commotion! So let’s get into the faves and least faves. I’m interested to hear if you all agree with my picks.

Top 5 Best Dressed
Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein by Appointment
Best Supporting Actress nominee Naomie Harris wore a sleek, slightly unexpected look from Calvin Klein by Appointment, the new made-to-measure label helmed by Raf Simons. Raf just showed his first collection for Calvin Klein, so he’s definitely the designer of the hour. Naturally, everyone was excited when he announced that he would be dressing the entire cast of Best Picture winner Moonlight for the Oscars.
I’m obsessed with Naomie’s entire look: From the sleek silhouette to the expertly applied sequins, to the unexpected cutouts, to the slightly mismatched yellow heels (NEED!!!), there’s a lot to marvel at here. I also love that Naomie kept her beauty look minimal to allow the dress to shine.
Brie Larson in Oscar de la Renta
Presenter Brie Larson looked gorgeous, dramatic, and totally on-trend in a black velvet Oscar de la Renta gown with a major v-shaped neckline and an even more major ruffled train.
I was so excited to see this look on Brie. While she always looks gorgeous, this dress was next-level fashion girl wear and I’m here for it. I never would have expected her to land on my best dressed list this year, but she surprised me in the best way. Everything about this is perfection. Bravo, Brie!
Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture
Best Actress in a Leading Role winner Emma Stone dressed the part of a leading lady in shimmering gold Givenchy. In the grand tradition of “wear gold to win Oscar gold” (seriously, it’s a thing), Emma stunned in this glittery fringed number.
Emma’s gown is extra special because it’s one of Riccardo Tisci’s last designs for Givenchy. Emma made history with her win, and she made fashion history at the same time–she’s the first Best Actress winner to wear Givenchy in the history of the awards.
Hailee Steinfeld in Ralph & Russo
Hailee Steinfeld wowed everyone when she showed up on the red carpet in this uber romantic–and oh-so grown up–frock by Ralph & Russo. Featuring ruffles, scalloped edges, and a sheer bodice with strategically placed flowers, Hailee’s gown was nothing short of ethereal.
Hailee accented her look with a chic updo, bronzey makeup, and plenty of diamonds. So pretty.
Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture
She did it again! Janelle Monae, one of my fashion faves of this awards season, wore yet another show-stopping look–the best of the bunch, if you ask me.
If you follow Janelle’s style, you know that she loves to wear menswear and black and white. This awards season, she’s pushed her fashion boundaries while still staying true to her personal style. This Elie Saab Couture look, described by her stylist as “the grand finale” of her awards show looks, was a fantastic choice. There’s so much to take in: I recommend you spend a few minutes looking this one over and admiring the detail!
Other Noteworthy Looks
Taraji P. Henson in Custom Alberta Ferretti
“Fierce” is the best word to describe Taraji P. Henson‘s look last night. I mean, let’s break down the components: Portrait neckline, smooth navy velvet, sky-high slit, strappy stilettos, and the biggest diamond necklace we’ve seen in years. (See also: That emerald ring!) This custom Alberta Ferretti look was a total stunner in my book. What do you think of it?
Emma Roberts in Vintage Armani
Emma Roberts debuted a new red hair color on the red carpet, which looked fantastic with her revealing cream and white vintage Armani gown. Emma explained that her vintage look was intended to support sustainability in fashion. Let’s be honest: Is there anything better than caring for our planet… while also looking fabulous… while attending the freakin’ Oscars? Yeah, Emma has the life.
Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad Couture
Chrissy Teigen once again schooled us on red carpet style, looking gorgeous in a flowing white Zuhair Murad gown. Never one to shy away from glamor, Chrissy rocked her silver and gold beaded dress with major drop earrings and a shiny gold clutch. Naturally, it all worked together. Does this girl ever get it wrong?
Ruth Negga in Custom Valentino
Ruth Negga solidified her place as our new favorite fashionista to watch, capping off her awards season looks with this unexpected Valentino gown. Featuring lace detailing and a Victorian-style collar, Ruth’s dress was a refreshingly demure pick for such a glamorous night. She finished her look with a statement headband and a blue ribbon in support of the ACLU.
Least Favorite Look
Leslie Mann in Zac Posen
I absolutely adore Leslie Mann so I’m sad to list her as my least favorite look of the night. However, this Zac Posen look just wasn’t an example of #livingyourbestlife. While I liked this gown in theory (yellow strapless ballgown? I’m intrigued), it looked rumpled in photos. Also, its bright color and overly voluminous silhouette distracted from Leslie’s natural beauty. This was a miss for me.
What did you think of the 2017 Oscars fashion?
Which look was your favorite? Did you stay up and see all the craziness go down live? Do you think Leo was responsible for everything? Let’s talk in the comments, friends!
Brie Larson is last year’s winner and a presenter this year, not a nominee.
Eek, thank you! Fixed.
Okay I hear you but…. Dakota Johnson was worst dressed. No contest.
Hmm, she was def my second least fave. I thought the wrinkled bottom of Leslie’s dress looked worse. But that Gucci was a bizarre choice for Dakota.
BEST SUBHEADING EVER
Also, Janelle and Naomie were my faves, too.
Wow, even the “least favourite” look is gorgeous, and that Elie Saab dress is just beautiful, while still not stealing the spotlight from Janelle.
